Our new sea turtle nest excavation program provides an opportunity for visitors and members of the local community to join a biologist on the beach and learn about the nesting biology of sea turtles while collecting important data on the success of our nests. This educational program will be led by a staff member permitted through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to perform nest excavations, which are routine activities where the contents of a sea turtle nest are briefly removed from the sand three days after hatching for data collection. This information is crucial to understanding how well the nests on our beaches are doing and for the ongoing management and conservation of these threatened and endangered sea turtle species.

While there is a chance we might encounter a live hatchling during the excavation, we cannot guarantee that you will see them during this program. All excavations will take place in the morning on South Hutchinson Island, and the specific meeting location will be provided after registration. Due to the nature of this program, we are on “turtle time” and won’t be able to open registration more than 3 days in advance.
